GALVESTON, Texas -- The Texas Faculty Association claims the firing of about 3,800 UTMB employees is illegal, KPRC Local 2 reported Tuesday.
A lawsuit filed in Galveston County accuses the regents of breaking the law by meeting in secret when it decided to fire thousands of employees at the University of Texas Medical Branch.
They said it violated the Texas Open Meetings act. The lawsuit claims the actions taken during the meeting are void.
The faculty association said that when the regents meet in secret, they are held accountable to no one.
TFA is an advocacy group for professors and staff.
Hurricane Ike caused more than $700 million in damage to UTMB.
The lawsuit claims the illegal meeting was held on Nov. 12 in El Paso. Less than two weeks later, 3,000 employees had been fired.
The lawsuit claims that the firing is the regents' attempt to diminish the strength of the teaching hospital in Galveston and an effort to ultimately move the school to Austin.
The lawsuit claims the regents only had $100 million in insurance because it had decided to insure itself. That leaves the regents with a $610 million bill for uninsured losses.
The lawsuit asks that the minutes and recordings of the Nov. 12 meeting be released.
