Furniture Bank Needs Donations, Volunteers
POSTED: Monday, November 24, 2008
HOUSTON -- The Houston Furniture Bank has been busy helping Hurricane Ike victims replace destroyed items and needs help to get families through the holidays during tough economic times, KPRC Local 2 reported Monday.
The Houston Furniture Bank is a charity that services charities.
"We are like a charity behind charities," Executive Director Oli Mohammed said. "Fifty different charities, when they have families that they're serving, satisfying other needs, they bring them for furniture to us. We call ourselves charity behind charities."
The bank has a high demand for mattresses, dining room tables and dressers.
The organization needs volunteers to help keep them going.
"We need volunteers starting from answering phone calls, going with families to walk in to when they're selecting (furniture), helping them select furniture, unload the trailers," Mohammed said.
The Houston Furniture Bank helps 100 to 150 families a month.
"With Ike, we're looking at thousands of families," Mohammed said.
Furniture donations can be made to the bank at 2100 Hussion St. near the Gulf Freeway from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.
The furniture bank also needs help picking up donations and delivering furniture. Anyone with a truck who would like to volunteer their time is asked to call 713-842-9771.
Any Hurricane Ike needing help from the furniture bank is urged to register through the Hurricane Ike Help Line at 713-276-3955.
