RICHMOND, Texas -- A man has been charged in connection with the death of a woman whose body was found stuffed in a storm drain, KPRC Local 2 reported.
Jack Crutchfield woke up Saturday with the unpleasant chore of washing blood off of his driveway.
Fort Bend County investigators said a woman's body was dragged in front of his house.
"It's disheartening," Crutchfield said. "I figured I couldn't come home last night because my home was part of the crime scene."
Crutchfield also had the unfortunate duty of keeping his chore and the gruesome details of what happened next door away from this 11-year-old daughter.
"I cannot let her watch the news because she doesn't know and she would be terrified," he said.
Investigators said 21-year-old Steven Oliver, who lives right next door, confessed to trying to hide the body of 25-year-old Melissa Barajas in a storm drain.
Investigators said the two knew each other but were not close.
"He may have wanted a more serious relationship than she did," Chief Deputy Craig Brady said.
Investigators said a witness spotted Oliver dragging what looked like a body down the street. Several hours later, deputies followed a blood trail back to the house where Oliver lives with his parents.
"The oddest part is that someone saw them at 4:30 in the morning," Brady said.
Fort Bend County investigators said Oliver confessed to being there during Barajas' death, and to trying to wash away the blood.
But investigators said he claims that he did not kill the young mother from southwest Houston.
Oliver claimed she stabbed herself multiple times in the neck and upper body. But investigators said that is not likely and physically impossible
"It's my opinion that his statements are strictly self-serving," Brady said. "He's just trying to cover what he knows; the evidence is that we have."
Investigators said they recovered a large kitchen knife that was used in the death. They also have the clothes Oliver was wearing when he said he disposed of the body.
"We are shocked and devastated by the sudden and violent death of Melissa," Barajas' family wrote in a statement. "She will be missed by many, particularly her son."
Barajas left behind a 6-year-old son.
Oliver has been charged with tampering with evidence and was being held on a $500,000 bond. He could face more serious charges pending the outcome of the autopsy.
Barajas' family has set up a memorial fund for Melissa Barajas at Wells Fargo. They said she was an insulin-dependent diabetic who was unable to work. They said she did not leave behind enough money for a funeral service.
