Officers Accused Of Beating NFL Player's Dad Reassigned

POSTED: Friday, November 21, 2008
UPDATED: 5:59 pm CST November 21, 2008

Three police officers accused in connection with the beating of a professional football player's father have been reassigned, KPRC Local 2 reported Friday.

Marvin Driver Jr., the father of Green Bay Packers wide receiver Donald Driver, said he was severely beaten and drugged after he was arrested for outstanding traffic warrants outside his mother's home in southeast Houston in the 8300 block of Gibbons shortly before 2 a.m. Monday.

Donald Driver flew to Houston to be with his father for a few days and has since returned to Wisconsin.

Donald Driver spoke for the first time about the incident on Friday.

"He's one of those guys -- a tough cookie, so the biggest thing is that he's happy right now and he had a smile on his face when I left, and told me to get back to work, so I had to go back to work," he said.

The officers, Bacilio Guzman, Gilberto Cruz and M. Marin, have been put on administrative duty pending the outcome of an investigation.

"The doctors have clearly stated to us that Mr. Driver's injuries are from blunt force trauma -- that's what his injuries are from -- not from a slip-and-fall, not from a diabetic attack," said Quanell X with the New Black Panther Nation.

"We don't only want their jobs, we want criminal charges brought up against them because my brother was really hurt really bad," said Mary Driver, Marvin Driver's sister.

The Ministers Against Crime said that the officers should have been removed from the streets when the allegations were made.

"We know that in the past that they have removed officers until the investigations are done," Dr. Robert Gilmore Sr. said. "In this particular situation you're talking about a beating of a person who was supposed to have been arrested and taken to jail. Now he's in ICU. That does not sit well with anybody in the community, regardless of who they are."

Police said Marvin Driver was unresponsive when they arrived at the southeast Houston jail and he was taken to a hospital.

"We take allegations such as these very seriously and will conduct a thorough investigation into the matter and be transparent in our findings, whatever the conclusion," Police Chief Harold Hurtt said.

Marvin Driver's family has hired a private detective and spoken to the Houston Police Department about the allegations.

Driver remained hospitalized Friday for more tests.
