Family Wants Store To Provide More Protection

The family of a slain woman said it believes a grocery store should have done more to protect its customers, KPRC Local 2 reported Monday.

Kim Bui, 49, was killed after running to the store to buy supplies for work. Her husband, Steve Bui, said their three sons are struggling with her death.

Bui said, "They cannot focus into studying because they miss their mom and I cannot be -- act like a mom. I always can be a good dad, but I cannot be a mom. So, there's a portion that I cannot -- never make them feel the same like before."

On Oct. 16, Steve Bui and his wife were shopping at the Kroger near their home at State Highway 6 and Bissonnet in Fort Bend County when someone shot into their car, killing Kim. Avelino Diaz was also shot and killed the same day.

Terence Andrus, 20, was charged with murder.

The Buis' attorney, Brent Carpenter, said the store could have provided more protection and done more for the family.

"It's a little upsetting that Kroger and the shopping center never even called the Buis family. I don't know if they called the Diaz family, have never checked on them, have never done anything and haven't even, after this, changed their ways. Sometimes lawsuits are the only way to get action done," Carpenter said. "(Kroger) had prior crimes."

Kroger released a statement saying, in part, "We work closely with the shopping center property management to provide a safe place to park and shop. In addition, we believe parking lot lighting and video surveillance is important to the safety of customers."

KPRC Local 2 video obtained one month ago showed no video camera above the main store entrance. There is now a surveillance camera above the front doors.

There was also a security guard near the store on Monday.

The Buis' attorney said he would like to see security officers roaming the parking lot.

"What I like to see is they have to do some kind of improving there, so the tragedy that happened to my family is not going to happen to any other family because we go through this painful experience and we don't want that to happen to any family," Steve Bui said.

The Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office showed two major crimes reported in the store parking lot this year -- the killings in October plus an aggravated kidnapping three weeks ago.

In 2007, there were seven major crimes in the area, including three aggravated robbery cases.
