18-wheeler accident shuts down freeway

Police: Good Samaritans may have saved victim's life

HOUSTON – A major accident on I-10 caused some major trouble for overnight travelers.

Around 3:30 a.m. Saturday, investigators said a 26-year-old woman was speeding down I-10 east near Magnolia in East Harris County when she slammed into another car.

That car ended up against the inside concrete wall. The car that had been speeding came to a stop in the middle of the freeway, officials said.

An 18-wheeler couldn't stop in time and slammed into the car, police said. Officials said the car burst into flames with the woman trapped inside.

Some good Samaritans rushed to her rescue, doing everything they could to pull her to safety.

"We had a few citizens stop and help us lift her up," said Calvin Rutledge, one of the people who helped the woman. "She kind of lifted up herself there at the end. And we done our best to get her out and get her to safety."

The woman was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Investigators said she had burns on 15% of her body.

The driver wasn't hurt, officials said. There were no reports of any other injuries..

Officials said the accident shut down the freeway for around two hours.
