79 Feral Cats Rescued From Rundown Home

POSTED: Thursday, November 6, 2008

Seventy-nine feral cats were rescued from a rundown home in northeast Houston on Wednesday, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Officials with the Houston Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said the home belongs to an 82-year-old woman whose son uses the home to house his collection of cats.

Some of the cats were found hiding in walls and holes throughout the home.

Cruelty investigators said the stench of ammonia from the cats' feces and urine was so strong that it could be smelled outside the home.

Many of the cats had respiratory problems and one was missing an eye due to an infection, officials said.

The man who owns the cats has been hospitalized for several days with severe bites and scratches from the cats.
