Drug Suspect Accused Of Attacking DEA Agent, HPD Officer

POSTED: Thursday, October 30, 2008
UPDATED: 8:31 pm CDT October 30, 2008

A drug suspect has been accused of assaulting an undercover Houston police officer and Drug Enforcement Administration special agent, police told KPRC Local 2.

Houston police said officers of a multi-agency narcotics task force tried to arrest Stephen Lawrence Anderson after a drug transaction in the 1500 block of North Eldridge Parkway at about 11:15 a.m. Wednesday.

Police said that officers blocked in Anderson's Hummer. When officers wearing police raid jackets approached the vehicle, Anderson used his Hummer as a battering ram and repeatedly hit a DEA agent's car, investigators said.

Anderson drove the Hummer onto the hood of the DEA agent's car, detectives said.

Houston senior police officer A.A. Vanderberry and a Department of Public Safety sergeant fired at Anderson's vehicle because they feared for the DEA agent's life, investigators said.

None of the shots fired by the officer nor the sergeant wounded Anderson, police said.

Detectives said Anderson managed to push the DEA agent's car back far enough to drive away. He gave chase for a short while until officers arrested him in the 14600 block of Memorial Drive, police said.

Anderson, 28, has been charged with aggravated assault against a public servant and manufacturing and delivery of a controlled substance.
