GALVESTON, Texas -- As lawmakers continue to walk through Hurricane Ike's damage in Galveston, many residents and employees still don't have all the answers to their questions, KPRC Local reported Tuesday.
Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst walked through the University of Texas Medical Branch facilities to assess the damage. He said the first floor of the hospital is completely ruined and it will take several months before things get back to normal.
UTMB employees Wendy Baker and Robert English turned their home into a day care so their daughter, Jillian, and five other children who used to go to the UTMB day care would have somewhere to play.
UTMB's day care was destroyed along with several other buildings at the hospital. UTMB officials told Baker and English that it could be several months or years before the day care is rebuilt.
"When you are sitting there worrying about where your child is and if they are safe, it's hard to be productive," said English.
Many UTMB employees said they wonder if the hospital will go back to normal and if there will be layoffs.
"Everyone is kind of wondering on pins and needles if they have a job or not," said Baker.
Sen. Steve Ogden said it's too soon to tell if there will be layoffs.
"If there are layoffs, we will let all the employees know with plenty of notice and help them through the transition," said Ogden.
UTMB is not operating as a full service hospital. Only the emergency room and maternity and the research departments are open. The rest is still up in the air.
Lawmakers are meeting with UT officials to decide how much of the hospital will be completely rebuilt and which programs will be canceled or moved. A date as to when decisions will be made has not been set.
Hurricane Ike caused the institution more than $700 million in damage, clean up and lost revenue.
