Nearly six weeks after Hurricane Ike hit Galveston Island, the shelter housing people who lost their homes is about to shut down while hundreds waited in line at an assistance center, KPRC Local 2 reported Wednesday.

More than 200 residents stood in line at the Kemah Community Center before noon, holding umbrellas to shield them from the sun while they waited for help from the Salvation Army.

Everyone had a reason.

"Our house got flooded. Our garage had 3 feet. The house had about 10 inches. I lost our roof. I lost my car and can't afford to buy another because it was an older car. I lost my boat," said Wanda Hamblen.

But the Salvation Army did not help everyone. Officials said only those from Galveston, San Leon, Seabrook, Bacliff, Shoreacres and Kemah were eligible for assistance at that location.

Residents must show proof, from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, of need.

The Salvation Army's help was in the form of food, cleaning kits and $200 gift cards.

"It will help me a lot, especially on gas traveling back and forth. I lost time and everything," said Latricia Mozie.

Approximately 300 people are still calling the Red Cross shelter home in Galveston, even though it will close on Sunday.

In addition to a bed, they have showers, restrooms, laundry facilities and three meals a day.

Some don't know where to go when it is shut down.

"It's been a life-line really. I don't know where we would be right now. There's a lot of people who don't have anywhere to go. Some people have families they can go to. Some don't. We're just out here, you know," said Sharon Frazier.

Ike slammed ashore on Galveston on Sept. 13.
