A southwest Houston street collapsed into a massive sinkhole Tuesday.

Sink Hole

The hole at Almeda and Almeda Plaza is approximately 10 feet deep and 40 feet wide.

City officials said that they do not know what caused it but an 84-inch sewer line underneath the hole has collapsed, but it is still working.

"There is also a 20-inch water line we had to shut down. We don't know yet if it's causing the problem," said Wes Johnson, with Public Works.

Approximately a dozen nearby residents and businesses are temporarily without water while the sinkhole is investigated and repaired.

Officials have blocked off the area so motorists must detour around it.

It's not known when the area will reopen.
