HPD Issues Warning About Craigslist Scam

POSTED: Wednesday, October 8, 2008

At least four people have fallen for a vehicle scam on craigslist.com, police told KPRC Local 2 Wednesday.

Houston police said someone has posted ads for vehicles for sale and then contacted potential buyers through e-mail.

The seller has told the buyer that he represents eBay, Inc., detectives said.

Investigators said the seller has requested payment through MoneyGram. The payments have been retrieved at several MoneyGram locations throughout Houston, police said.

The buyers have not been able to get in contact with the seller after the money has exchanged hands, officials said. The buyers have also not received the vehicle they agreed to purchase.

Anyone who believes they may be a victim of the scam is asked to call the Houston Police Department Major Offenders Division Computer Crimes Unit at 713-308-3100.
