HOUSTON -- A DNA expert told a jury Tuesday that dried liquid found on the balcony of an apartment belonging to a man who has been accused of killing, dismembering and burning the remains of his ex-girlfriend matched the victim's DNA, KPRC Local 2 reported.
Timothy Shepherd is charged with murder in connection with the death of Texas A&M freshman Tynesha Stewart, 19, during spring break in 2007.
Shepherd allegedly choked Stewart, took her body apart and used two barbecue grills to dispose of her body.
The DNA expert also told the jury that she found bloodstains on Shepherd's blue jeans.
Stewart's mother also testified on Tuesday. Gale Lewis tearfully told jurors that Shepherd refused to open his apartment door when Lewis tried to get information from him about her daughter's disappearance.
She testified that she believed Shepherd was lying when he said he did not know where she was or what happened to her.
Police said Shepherd confessed to destroying Shepherd's remains. Prosecutors have shown the jury bleach bottles that were found in his apartment that were allegedly used to cover up the killing.
Shepherd's attorney has argued that he asked for an attorney before offering the confession. A judge decided that Shepherd waived his rights, making the alleged confession admissible.
If convicted, Shepherd faces up to life in prison.
The jury could get the case on Wednesday.
