Bill Heard Chevrolet Closes Dealerships

What's been called the largest Chevrolet dealer in the country is shutting down, KPRC Local 2 reported Wednesday.

Bill Heard Enterprises has two dealerships in the Houston area -- in Sugar Land at 13115 Southwest Freeway, and at Landmark Chevrolet at 9111 North Freeway.

The operations manager at Landmark Chevrolet told KPRC Local 2 that the dealership found out at about 2 p.m. that it is no longer selling cars.

The company is expected to file for bankruptcy in the coming days.

Approximately 750 employees in Houston will be affected.

According to a company statement released Wednesday through Atlanta public relations professional Alan Ulman, the closures will affect about 2,700 employees nationwide.

The statement says the company did not have the resources to continue operating. It cites factors including rising fuel prices, an inventory dominated by trucks and SUVs, economic recession, unfavorable market conditions and the current banking and financial crises.

The Columbus-based company has five dealerships in Georgia and nine in six other states -- Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Nevada, Tennessee and Texas.
