Special-Needs Victims Get Needed Equipment

Woman's Blog Post Prompts Delivery

UPDATED: 10:04 pm CDT September 20, 2008

A Houston woman’s blog post prompted volunteers to send truckloads of special-needs items for Hurricane Ike victims in Texas, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Volunteers from across the country assembled to make the special delivery to special-needs victims happen.

The Florida Red Cross donated two tractor-trailers, which hauled wheelchairs, crutches and walkers, which were donated from Florida, and cash came flowing from South Carolina.

Deborah Nowinski, who runs the Houston Dionysis Theater, where people of all abilities are stars, said someone needed to think of Houstonians with special needs.

“The people down at the George R. Brown said that they were in desperate need for wheelchairs and for walkers and for canes… And that’s the majority of the equipment that we have brought in,” said Nowinski.

Ron Ingham, with the Florida Red Cross, said in past disasters, he has experienced a shortage of special needs items.

“We're just bringing in the equipment, so we're just hoping the people get it who need to get it,” said Nowinski.

The Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities will distribute the equipment.

Walkers, wheelchairs and power cords for electric wheelchairs will be available by calling the mayor’s office at 713-837-9061.
