The Houston SPCA needs help housing pets that were lost, abandoned or injured during Hurricane Ike, KPRC Local 2 reported Friday.

The organization needs families to foster a pet for 10 days. The foster "parent" would have the option to adopt the pet or return it to the shelter if its owner does not claim the pet within those 10 days.

There are some requirements for foster "parents":

  • current pets in foster homes must be vaccinated and spayed/neutered
  • must keep foster pet in separate room/area from current pets
  • renters must have permission from landlord and present lease agreement
  • must present photo identification and provide current contact information
  • must sign contract stating that the foster pet belongs to Houston SPCA

Foster "parents" will not be responsible for veterinary care during the 10-day foster period.

Families interested in fostering a pet can download an application online or go to the Houston SPCA at 900 Portway Drive.
