Dozens of people lined up at the George R. Brown Convention Center Thursday after a text message and radio stations said they could get a $500 voucher from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, but it was just a rumor, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Dozens Wait For FEMA Vouchers After Getting Hoax Message: Winston Dutchin Reports

"Someone sent it," said one woman in line. "I don't know who it was."

The message said that people should arrive at the convention center at 5 a.m.

"A few radio stations were giving out factually incorrect information, saying that FEMA vouchers would be available here at the George R. Brown, which is absolutely incorrect," convention center spokeswoman Sharon Adams said.

The convention center is being used as a temporary transit hub for the American Red Cross.

There was a sign posted that clearly stated that there were no FEMA cards, but people were in disbelief and stayed in the line so they didn't lose their place.

The line formed across the street from the convention center because they were told that if they were in front of the building they could be arrested for violating the city's curfew.
