2-Alarm Fire Rips Through Brennan's Restaurant

HOUSTON -- A two-alarm fire related to Hurricane Ike gutted a famous downtown Houston restaurant early Saturday and injured three people, KPRC Local 2 reported.
Brennan's of Houston, located at 3333 Smith St., caught fire shortly after midnight.
Fire crews tried to put out the blaze, but water poured on the restaurant by ladder trucks was blown around by strong winds.
Two people suffered critical injuries in the fire. James Koonce, a 41-year-old manager at the restaurant, and his 4-year-old daughter, Katherine, suffered severe burns. They were taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital for treatment of burns over 70 percent of their bodies.
Another man was hurt and taken to a hospital for treament.
Investigators said a blown transformer started the fire.
Brennan's has been a popular fine-dining restaurant in Houston for nearly 40 years. An employee said 16,000 bottles of wine were inside the restaurant.
