Recruiting Officer Charged With Sex Assault

POSTED: Thursday, September 4, 2008
UPDATED: 5:55 pm CDT September 4, 2008

A Navy recruiting officer was arrested at his office in a Galveston County shopping mall, accused of sexually abusing young girls, KPRC Local 2 reported Thursday.

Investigators said Douglas Nathaniel Bowie, 31, was taken into custody on Wednesday in the Naval recruiting station at the Mall of the Mainland.

He was charged with aggravated sexual assault of a child and indecency with a child.

Bowie allegedly had sex with two 12-year-old girls. In one of those cases, the abuse allegedly began in 2001. Police are also talking to a third potential victim.

"We're currently looking into an additional case involving a 16-year-old female that could very well lead to additional charges being filed," said Capt. Donnie Head with the La Marque Police Department.

DNA samples were submitted on Thursday to determine if Bowie fathered a child by the girl.

Bowie's wife refused to talk about that or any of the other allegations against her husband when contacted by KPRC Local 2.

Bowie was first investigated in 2005 when another girl told police that he had sexually abused her. That case was no-billed by a Galveston grand jury after the victim recanted her story.

Police said they will revisit that case now, and they are also trying to determine if there are any other possible victims.

Bowie was arrested after one of the 12-year-old girls he's charged with abusing wrote a letter detailing a history of alleged sexual assaults by Bowie that began when she was 6 years old.

Bowie is being held on a $240,000 bond.
