HOUSTON -- Two Houston organizations headed to Louisiana Wednesday to provide relief to those affected by Hurricane Gustav, KPRC Local 2 reported.
Catholic Charities Galveston-Houston and CenterPoint Energy workers left Houston at about 6 a.m.
Catholic Charities loaded two trucks with $32,000 worth of food, water, toiletries, cleaning supplies and other necessities. These donations were given through the Houston Food Bank.
Several staff members traveled 316 miles to deliver the goods to Napoleonville, La., outside of New Orleans.
"We received word the conditions out there were primitive," Catholic Charities spokesperson Julissa Chappell said. "People out there don't have the basics -- cloths to wash their hands and baby diapers. We want to make sure people out there can survive."
A convoy of several dozen CenterPoint Energy trucks headed to New Iberia, La., to help three utility companies restore power to customers throughout the region. Nearly 1.4 million customers were left in the dark after Gustav.
Sixty volunteer linemen and support staff went on the trip.
