METRO Bus Crashes Into Building

By Courtney Zavala

POSTED: Sunday, August 31, 2008

A METRO bus crashed into a building in downtown Houston on Saturday, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Half of the bus was lodged in the Esperson Building at 800 Milam St.

Witnesses said the driver of a dark gray pickup truck ran a red light and hit the bus at about 8:30 a.m.

"It's just not worth it. Wherever you're trying to go, it's not worth people's lives," said Ona Anderson, who rides the bus daily.

The impact sent the bus crashing in to the building. For the few people who were around, it sent them in to a panic.

"We heard the boom. The next thing you know it was off in the building. When you hear something like that you just take off running," said Al Howard.

The 10 passengers, bus driver and the driver of the pickup were all transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

If the crash had happened on a weekday with crowded streets and sidewalks, the injuries could have been much worse.

Crews assessed the damage to the building before pulling the bus out.

"Our rescue crews have gone in and searched the floor above the incident, the second floor, and we've gone in and looked at different pillars that support the structure. We didn't find any structural damage," said Assistant Fire Chief Omero Longoria with the Houston Fire Department.

The building's management confirmed no one was in the building at the time of the crash.

METRO Police are investigating the incident.
