Attorney Who Stole From Clients Sentenced

A personal injury attorney who stole from clients was sentenced to 35 years in prison on Thursday, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Steven Bearman, 44, pleaded guilty to stealing more than $1.5 million.

According to prosecutors, Bearman took the money from people who hired him to represent them in personal injury cases. He settled the cases, pocketed the money and lied to his clients, most of whom needed the cash to pay medical bills.

Bearman used the money to finance luxury homes, expensive cars, sports tickets and country club dues.

He pleaded guilty to misapplication of fiduciary responsibility in May and promised to begin paying back his clients.

Prosecutors said Bearman compounded his crime while he was out on bond by paying restitution with money stolen from the law firm he was working for.

Prosecutors asked for life in prison.
