Police Crack Down On Downtown Crime

POSTED: Tuesday, August 26, 2008
UPDATED: 5:34 pm CDT August 26, 2008

Houston police are teaming with other law enforcement agencies to launch a crackdown to clean up the streets of downtown Houston, KPRC Local 2 reported Tuesday.

The project is called "Operation Crossover."

The Houston Police Department's special operations division and midtown patrol district, along with the METRO Police Department, will target near the Greyhound Bus station at 2121 Main Street.

The agencies are enforcing a "zero tolerance" stance by snagging people for jaywalking, outstanding warrants, trespassing, panhandling, burglary, vandalism, public urination and loitering.

"We're not out there to play games with them or hold their hand and give them second or third chances," Capt. G.J. Fremin said. "They're going to understand that we mean business."

A homeless man who said he has been arrested several times for cleaning windshields said it is not fair.

"I clean windows to eat," Mark Thomas said. "I'm not robbing. I'm not stealing. I'm not taking anything from no one. I'm not being rude."

Police said that giving the homeless money is not the solution to their problems.

"Don't facilitate the problem by keep giving them money," Fremin said. "You're just enabling them to keep being homeless."

Police said part of the problem in the area is that many parolees get dropped off at the bus station and some go back to their criminal ways.

HPD Crime statistics from June revealed two robberies and seven drug-related crimes in the 2100 block of Main. In July, one robbery, one aggravated assault and two drug crimes were reported in the same block.
