Probation Officer Fired Over Controversial Cartoons

A Harris County probation officer was fired after he allegedly handed out controversial cartoons as part of a CPR and first aid training course, KPRC Local 2 reported Monday.

"There was a defined curriculum, clearly defined," said Harvey Hetzel, executive director of the juvenile corrections department. "He strayed from it."

The instructor allegedly passed out cartoons that some said were crude and offensive.

Nine sentences and corresponding images on the handout were apparently supposed to encourage people to wash their hands.

One example: "During an hour at a municipal pool you will ingest 1/12 liter of urine."

"It's crazy, absolutely crazy," said Roxell Richards, who represents the Afro-American Sheriff's Deputy League. "Why there was a need, I just don't understand."

County Judge Ed Emmett did not understand the point, either.

"It was so inappropriate," said Emmett. "What is so bad is this was a mixed audience."

"I can't defend it. it shouldn't have occurred," said Hetzel. "It was dealt with. We're not going to tolerate a presentation like this."

He said the employee was fired four days after the incident and all other trainers were told to follow the curriculum.
