A west Houston apartment resident helped his neighbors evacuate Saturday when a two-alarm fire broke out, KPRC Local 2 reported.

When Johnny Bryant stepped out of his apartment in the 9700 block of Meadow Glen Lane, he was greeted with a startling scene,

"I just opened up my door, it was just a blaze of fire," Bryant said. "The fire was horrendous."

He said his instincts kicked in. There were several units on fire in a building in the Landing at Westchase Apartments.

Bryant told Local 2 that he ran over and busted the door down with his shoulder. Then he broke a window out with his fist in an effort to save his neighbors.

"I couldn't see anything. (I was) choking and gagging," he said. "I know they have a little girl. I was just making sure everybody was out."

Fire officials arrived shortly after and said the fire was spreading quickly.

The apartment building has eight units. Fire officials said three received heavy fire damage.

"Within a few minutes, they had fire going up to the second floor and the flames were spreading all over," Assistant Fire Chief Jack Williams said. "They went ahead and pulled a second alarm to get some people in here and get the fire stopped."

Fire crews were able to contain the fire, knocking it down in 30 minutes.

But now, several families are without homes, possibly even Bryant.

"It's totally demolished. I don't know if I have a place to live," Bryant said.

He was just happy to report that everyone made it out safely.

"I messed up my hand and my shoulder is dislocated, but I'm just glad that nobody got killed," he said.
