HOUSTON -- When people hear the word organic, many think of the food they eat. However, what you wear can also be organic and help Mother Earth, KPRC Local 2 reported Friday.
For two years, Lisa Hommel has sold organic clothing at the Farmers' Market.
"It is dyed with low-impact dyes, so no heavy metals. I have so many things I make and sell that need so much explanation, and signs just aren't enough," Hommel said.
Polyester and rayon won't be found there. Instead, the labels have words such as bamboo, soy, hemp, and organically grown cotton. The cotton comes from a farm in Shamrock, Texas.
"It is all Texas-grown, sewn, and painted," Hommel said.
"I am from here, and it feels really good to rely on the people close to us for the things we need. We don't have to rely on things oceans away," Neda Mirkalai said.
For Hommel, her organic clothing is more than just words on a tag.
"It is not just the ingredient. It is how it is processed, how it is grown, how it is sewn, then how it is dyed, how it is made and the conditions it is made under," she said.
Hommel said that if the ingredient is not on the green list, you won't find it in her clothing.
"They are really helpful, like they help this, our planet, and we need that right now," she said.
Hommel sells her organic clothing at the Farmers' Market every Thursday in
Discovery Green and every Saturday in Nassau Bay.
