HOUSTON -- Water is an essential part of life, but one recent study shows it can be a human's worst enemy by causing type 2 diabetes when it is contaminated with arsenic, KPRC Local 2 reported Tuesday.
It's a metal found in soil then transferred to ground water, where get 50 percent of drinking water comes from.
Chemical engineer Dr. Michael Wong of Rice University said the low levels of the metal have always been in water, but those levels are closely monitored.
A study by John Hopkins University examined more than 700 adults and found an increase in the levels of arsenic in diabetic's urine after drinking tap water.
While scientist do more research on arsenic's effects, Wong said there is a new technology to clear the water from the danger.
"You work with technology companies that will clean up the water for you."
