HOUSTON -- Another Houston company joined the city's growing efforts to make our area more eco-friendly, KPRC Local 2 reported Tuesday.
The Houston Coca-Cola Bottling Co. unveiled a few of its new hybrid delivery trucks.
What looks like a typical Coke delivery truck is equipped with batteries in order to run off electricity some of the time.
"Our goal is to reduce our carbon footprint on the environment," said Tim Lynch with the Houston Coca-Cola Bottling Co.
Coca-Cola spent the past five years developing what are now the largest hybrids on the road.
The trucks use 32 percent less fuel than standard trucks. They also reduce emissions and noise.
"These efforts are our commitment to the environment but are good, core practices," Lynch said.
"We've got to begin somewhere. It begins with good businesses like Coca-Cola," Houston Mayor Bill White said.
White commended the company and said all drivers could take a cue from Coke.
"If we were able to cut our gas use by 32 percent, we would cut 4 to 5 million barrels of oil per day," White said.
Coca Cola said it is adding nine hybrid trucks to its Houston fleet this summer, and hopes for more.
