GALVESTON, Texas -- Tens of thousands of dollars' worth of gasoline has been stolen from a Galveston gas station, KPRC Local 2 reported.
Erick Bailon works at the Valero gas station on 53rd Street and remembers the night of Aug. 4.
"We got off around 12:15," said Bailon. "There was nobody around."
He said closing up was no different that night, but someone was able to get in to the gas wells overnight.
"The next day we didn't have no gas at all. We had to put bags over them and tell people, 'No gas.'" said Bailon.
More than 7,000 gallons of gasoline was gone.
Galveston police said they have never seen a theft like this.
"It's going to take a 40- to 45-foot trailer to haul that much fuel. Going to be a commercial truck," Detective Michelle Sollenberger said.
An outdoor surveillance camera only caught the corner of the truck, but it also showed that some people witnessed the theft.
"That time of night, we're hoping (we've) got some witnesses that maybe didn't realize they were witnessing a crime," said Sollenberger.
Bailon said the tanks are normally filled around the time the theft occurred.
"He comes at night, so police and customers probably just thought he was filling it," said Bailon.
Customers said it brings a whole new meaning to the term "gas guzzler." They just hope thefts like this won't leave them paying more. "I work hard," customer Gerron Young said. "I put my money in to buy gas, then someone comes and steals it. That's crazy."
Galveston police said they need help figuring out who the thieves are. Anyone with information is asked to call 409-765-3770.
