HOUSTON -- Temperatures are expected to reach nearly 100 degrees this weekend and firefighters are sending out a warning about the dangerous heat, KPRC Local 2 reported Friday.
The number of heat-related calls rises when the thermometer goes up. Houston's average high temperatures have been in the mid-90s.
Houston fire officials said this is one of the hottest times of the year, making it one of the most dangerous.
During the heat of the day, you could find Kylee Short, her husband and dog running around Houston's Memorial Park.
Short said, "My husband and I just moved here from Ohio. We've been her five or six weeks and it's much hotter here in Texas than we deal with in Ohio."
"Be sure you dress appropriately," Capt. Karen DuPont said. "That means actually long sleeves, lightweight long sleeves, light colors to help deflect the sun's rays as well as protect your skin as much as possible from direct rays of the sun."
The Harris County Medical Examiner's Office said they have confirmed four people have died from heat-related injuries.
One of the victims was an 8-month-old girl who died in a car when she was left alone in a back seat in March. Her father put her in the back seat to take her to day care in the morning, but he forgot to take her.
Another victim was a 2-year-old boy who was left in another car. His guardians did not realize he fell asleep in the car when his cousins went swimming.
DuPont said if someone is locked in a car, there are ways to get them out quickly.
"If you do accidentally lock a loved one in a car, or a child or a pet, and you need to access the vehicle, you can always call us or just grab a rock and break a window," she said.
Fire officials recommended going to libraries, community centers or shopping malls to escape the heat.
