Police: Parents Leave Baby In Car While Shopping

POSTED: Wednesday, July 30, 2008

A husband and wife were arrested and charged after police said they left their baby in a hot car while they went shopping, KPRC Local 2 reported Wednesday.

Karla Aguilar and Erick Martinez, both 33, were charged with child endangerment.

Police said the couple left their 14-month-old son in an SUV for 40 minutes in the parking lot of a Pasadena pawnshop, located in the 6300 block of Spencer Highway near Trebor, on Wednesday shortly after 4 p.m. while they shopped inside.

Investigators said it was 85 degrees outside.

The parents told police that their son was napping and they did not want to wake him.

The child was crying and sweating profusely when he was rescued. His condition was not released.

Other parents were shocked.

"That's a lame excuse," parent Michael Torch said. "They're lazy and didn't want to take him in with them."

"Sometimes running a quick errand turns into a longer errand and, of course, a child can suffer deadly consequences," said Estella Olguin with Child Protective Services.

CPS officials said that in July, three children in Texas have died from being left in hot cars.

Aguilar and Martinez were jailed on a $2,000 bond.
