HOUSTON -- A slimmed-down Waller County jail inmate who lost weight to escape through a vent was captured while taking a dip at a motel pool, KPRC Local 2 reported Wednesday.
Darryl Layne Norris, 26, was apprehended while swimming at a Red Roof Inn motel pool on the Northwest Freeway.
"We got a tip that there was a prisoner charged with murder, among other things, and we came over here and were able to find him," said Stephen Casko with the Houston Police Department.
Houston police, with the help of Texas Rangers and Waller County Sheriff's Deputies, arrested Norris Tuesday night.
Norris squeezed through a one-foot-wide air conditioner vent and escaped from the Waller County Jail after losing weight in recent months. He had been missing since Saturday.
"We found him. He walked out to the pool, got in the pool, he was taken into custody while he was in the pool," Casko said.
Norris, who was considered armed and dangerous, was arrested and returned to the Waller County Jail, where he faces more charges.
Deputies told KPRC Local 2 that Norris and another man were charged with murder in connection with the April 17 robbery of a convenience store, during which the business owner was shot and killed.
