HOUSTON -- Harris County sheriff's deputies arrested a man suspected of breaking into a retired Houston police officer's home, attacking him and stealing his truck, KPRC Local 2 reported.
Samuel Ernest, 37, was arrested on aggravated robbery charges.
Investigators said Ernest broke into the home in the 5000 block of Lanbeth in north Harris County shortly after 11 p.m. Sunday.
The homeowner told investigators he spotted Ernest inside and they got into a fight. The retired officer suffered a broken jaw and was taken to Ben Taub Hospital.
Ernest ran out of the home and jumped into a pickup truck that he stole out of the back yard, detectives said.
Deputies said Ernest tried to run over one of them when they arrived at the home. In defense, the sheriff's deputy fired his gun at Ernest. No one was hit.
A chase ensued and ended at the dead end of a street near Eastex Freeway and Aldine Mail Route Road, when Ernest crashed the truck in a ditch. He was arrested and taken to a hospital for treatment for his injuries.
The sheriff's deputy who fired his gun will not be placed on administrative leave because no one was hurt, officials said.
