Dirt Tested In Buried Fetus Investigation

POSTED: Friday, July 11, 2008
UPDATED: 5:48 pm CDT July 11, 2008

Tests are being conducted on dirt taken from the back yard of a Galena Park home to determine of a fetus was buried there, KPRC Local 2 reported Friday.

A teenager claims her mother made her take pills to abort her pregnancy and buried the fetus in the family's back yard.

Galena Park police took cadaver dogs to the family's home on Fifth Street at Center Drive shortly after 10 p.m. Thursday. Investigators said the dogs quickly made a definite hit on the scent of a decomposing body.

"She brought me here, showed me exactly where it was buried," said Alma Perez of her teenage niece, who she said came to her Thursday afternoon with a story she had trouble believing.

Police said the 16-year-old was about five months pregnant when she said her mom made her take some pills so she would abort the pregnancy.

"She was pregnant. Her mom killed the baby and it's not right," said Perez. "She said her mom forced her to do it. If she didn't take it, her mom was going to beat her up."

The teenager told police she took the pills and gave birth on June 10.

"It came out. You could still see the umbilical cord attached and her mom took everything," said Perez.

Police said Leticia Zamora, the teenager's mother, admitted that she buried the fetus in the back yard.

Investigators said Zamora was free to go because no body was found, but she could be charged with abuse of a corpse if the medical examiner is able to find DNA in the dirt collected from the yard.

"At this point we don't even know if a crime was committed," Chief Richard Pruett said. "Most of what we have is circumstantial."

Detectives said they do not know if the fetus was born dead or alive.

"She only confirmed that she buried the baby there. Beyond that, she wouldn't comment," Pruett said.

He said Texas Children's Hospital confirmed that the teenager recently gave birth.

"It doesn't add anything to our case because we believed the little girl to begin with. So, it doesn't affect any of the charges or whatever before we move along further in this case," Pruett said.

Police said the teenager is not suspected of any criminal activity.
