HPD: Con Artist Posed As Cancer Patient, Police Pathologist

POSTED: Friday, July 11, 2008
UPDATED: 4:32 pm CDT July 11, 2008

A woman police said conned her way into more than $100,000 has been arrested, KPRC Local 2 reported Friday.

Houston police said 57-year-old Katherine Milliken took on many titles: doctor, professional fundraiser and terminally ill cancer patient. She also allegedly pretended to work for the police department as a forensic pathologist.

Milliken disarmed her victims with charm and personality, detectives said.

"She has an extensive fraud background," Officer Debra Santander said. "Criminal history for bank fraud, mortgage fraud ... use of other Social Security numbers."

Investigators said that once Milliken gained her victims' trust, he bilked tens of thousands of dollars from them.

The victims were members of the Hobby Squadron, a local aviation group.

Investigators say Milliken defrauded five members of that group out of more than $100,000 by using their names and personal information to get multiple credit cards.

"The things that she bought with these credit cards: antique furniture, trips, hotel fair, shopping trips to Macy's and Dillard's," Santander said.

Police said Milliken also used the name of a business, Hobby Squadron Association, to open checking accounts to keep the credit lines open by making minimum payments on the credit cards.

The con started to collapse in early June when a member of the Hobby Squadron reported to HPD that he was a victim of identity theft. He named Milliken as a possible suspect, police said.

"From that point on, several other members began calling a week after I got the case saying they, too, had been victims of identity theft," Santander said.

Milliken has been charged with fraudulent use and/or possession of identifying information. She was also charged with possession of a controlled substance because she had cocaine when she was arrested, investigators said.

Detectives are working to determine if she was acting alone. Officials said her boyfriend introduced her to her victims, but he has not been implicated.

Police asked anyone who feels Milliken has victimized them to call the financial crimes unit at 713-308-2500.
