Police Release Sketch Of Couple's Killer

POSTED: Tuesday, July 1, 2008
UPDATED: 6:15 am CDT July 2, 2008

A sketch was released Tuesday of a man who killed a couple and wounded their son during a home invasion, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Pasadena police said Leo Gomez Sr. and Milagro Vanegas, both 53, were killed during the home invasion in the 2600 block of Burke Road near Everglade Drive at about 7:30 p.m. June 24. They died in the master bedroom from gunshot wounds to the head, police said.

Their son, Leo Gomez Jr., was shot in the head. He is in a coma at Memorial Hermann Hospital.

Lois Gibson has drawn more than 4,000 sketches, but said she is focused on one man.

"I have a really good feeling about this one," said Gibson. "It's incredibly hard. One-hundred percent of the witnesses say, 'I can't remember enough to create a sketch ... I don't remember that well.'"

A witness was able to give Gibson enough information to create a detailed sketch.

"I was told he had a hat on," said Gibson. "He has hair below the ears," said Gibson. " That is really rare from what I sketch. There's fat over this body that once was in good shape. It's chunky."

Creating a sketch takes about 15 minutes

"You know the eyes are right, the facial hair, the lips," said Gibson. "Never perfect though."

Even if it's not absolutely perfect, the finished product could help catch a killer.

"This sketch is capable of generating a lead to solve the case," said Gibson.

Gibson said she got a very strong sense of optimism when looking at the sketch.

"I feel like they're going solve this one. I really do," said Gibson. "I sure hope so."

The witness also described the killer as Hispanic, in his 20s or 40s, and about 5 feet 5 inches tall.

The intruder took the family's pickup truck as a getaway car and stole several long guns from the house, investigators said.

On Friday, Pasadena police released a picture of a pickup truck that was captured by a surveillance video on Fresa Road, the road the truck was found abandoned on, the night of the killings. Witnesses said they saw the man transfer property from the truck into another pickup truck driven by a second person.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
