POSTED: Monday, June 30, 2008
HOUSTON -- The 200th Houston Police Department Academy cadet class began on Monday, KPRC Local 2 reported.
Police Chief Harold Hurtt welcomed the dozens of recruits on their first day.
The department began formal training of police cadets in 1939 with a five-week-long class. The second class was not held until 1943.
Current police academy courses are 26 weeks long.
Members of "Class 200" will have a special epaulet of white stars on a navy background on their cadet uniforms to acknowledge the milestone.
