A 3-year-old boy was hospitalized after a car he was riding unrestrained in was involved in a massive wreck, KPRC Local 2 reported.

The collision happened at the intersection of FM 518 and Cullen Boulevard in Pearland, Brazoria County, at about 11:45 p.m. Thursday.

Pearland Police said that a woman driving a Chevrolet Impala, jam-packed with seven passengers, ran a red light and crashed into a white SUV with two people inside.

Nine people were rushed to the hospital.

The toddler, who was riding in the Impala without a car seat, was taken by helicopter to Memorial Hermann Hospital in critical condition. He suffered serious head injuries.

"After our investigation of the accident, we learned the female driver failed to restrain the child," Officer John Froning said.

A 52-year-old man was also flown to the hospital after suffering chest and back injuries. He was in stable condition.

Police said only two people inside the Impala were wearing a seat belt.

The driver of the Impala was cited for failure to restrain a child and a traffic violation.
