4 People Rescued In Galveston Bay

POSTED: Wednesday, June 4, 2008
UPDATED: 9:50 am CDT June 4, 2008

Four people, including a 5-year-old boy, were rescued from their disabled boat in Galveston Bay on Tuesday, KPRC Local 2 reported.

U.S. Coast Guard officials said they were notified at about 4:15 p.m. that a 16-foot Jon boat had broken down and was taking on water about a mile east of Bacliff, Texas.

The Coast Guard sent a helicopter crew and rescue boat to rescue the people onboard the boat. The rescue boat arrived at about 5:20 p.m. and took the people to the Bacliff boat ramp.

Officials said everyone was OK, but the 5-year-old was the only person wearing a life jacket when they were rescued.

The Coast Guard reminded boaters to:

  • wear Coast Guard-approved life jackets
  • carry a VHF radio to allow others to trace your location if you have trouble
  • be aware of weather and water conditions
  • never boat or paddle alone
  • file a float plan so others know where you plan to go
  • be aware of other vessels in your immediate area
  • do not exceed your ability to handle your vessel
