POSTED: Tuesday, September 3, 2002

A southwest Houston family thought they were the victims of a terrorist attack Tuesday when a driver crashed a Chevy Suburban through their home.

Police said the family was sleeping in their home in the 12500 block of Wrenthrope Drive when the sports vehicle crashed into a back bathroom, knocking down walls, and plowing through the house at 3 a.m.

"(It was) just a big, thundering crash coming through the bedroom and I looked up and saw headlights," said Johnny Scott, the homeowner.

Scott's wife, Rebecca, thought that their home was the target of domestic terrorism.

"I grabbed my husband and took my kids as fast as I could. And I had to come back to get my son because he wouldn't walk He was asleep and I came back and dragged him to the front door," Rebecca Scott said. "I thought that tanks had come and invaded, and that they were bombing. There were explosions -- the sound and the glass shattering -- and the fact that I could continue to hear the engine rev and back up and pull back forward. I just knew we were at war."

When the driver tried to escape the scene, he backed up the Suburban and hit the house a second time, officers said.

"With the second impact, all the glass shattered. By that point, we were already out of the front door," Rebecca Scott said.

The back of the home was demolished.

Police said alcohol is believed to be involved since beer was found in the vehicle.

No one was injured.

Someone reported the driver before he reached the home, according to authorities.

Another motorist flagged down a Harris County deputy constable at a nearby convenience store to report erratic driving by the Suburban's driver on Beltway 8.

The constable then arrested the suspect after the accident.

Authorities said that people should report suspected drunken drivers to 911 or Houston police at (713) 222-3131.
