Polygamist Parents Pick Up Children
Judge's Order To Return FLDS Children To Parents
The Texas Supreme Court ruled Monday that the children were to be returned to their parents immediately.Four mothers picked up five children at the Kidz Harbor center near Liverpool, Brazoria County, on Monday. Twenty-four children have been living at the facility for more than five weeks.South Texas College of Law attorney Donna Broom represents one of those children. Even with the signed order, she knows anything can happen in the largest child custody case in United States history."Even though we have the signed orders and it's gone all the way up to the Supreme Court, until the children are actually returned, you're still sitting on the end of your seat," she said.In the words of the order, "the court has an obligation to ensure that all of the children and their parents are reunited with all deliberate speed while ensuring the safety and well-being of the children."Once the children leave, Child Protective Services officials will still be able to check on the kids at home."We are pleased that at least we are going to be able to continue to be involved with these families and ensure that the children will be safe," CPS spokeswoman Estella Olguin said. "The court order does allow for us to continue our investigation into allegations of abuse or neglect."Parents had to fill out paperwork at the facility before they were allowed to take their children home. Some of the workers at the facility said they were sad to see the children go because they had formed close relationships.
