HOUSTON -- The scene looked like something out of a horror movie -- a truck driver lost control and spilled a cargo load of animal parts all over a northeast Houston roadway late Tuesday, KPRC Local 2 reported.
According to investigators, a Darling International driver was traveling northbound on the Eastex Freeway service road at about 11 p.m. when he failed to properly negotiate the turn at Cavalcade Road and flipped his truck.
The 18-wheeler had an open top trailer.
"We have lots of blood and animal parts and guts on the road," Houston Police Sgt. Art Bazan said. "We had to get an environmental unit out here to clean it up."
That cleanup unit included Martin Middleton, who was unaware of the job at hand.
"They called and asked me to come and clean sand," Middleton said.
Middleton found a much different scene when he arrived.
"Pigs and cows," he said.
Police said they believe speed may have been a factor.
Officers said no other vehicles were involved in the wreck, but the driver hit the traffic control box and knocked out the power to the traffic signals at the intersection.
Restoring power to the traffic signals had to wait until the mess was cleaned, officials said.
"I wouldn't want it," said David Hull with the Texas Department of Transportation. "That's basically it. I wouldn't want that job."
"It's a big job," Bazan said. "They can't just wash it up and let it go down into the drainage system. They have to do it properly."
"Someone's got to do it. It's my luck tonight," Middleton said.
Police said the truck driver was taken to Ben Taub Hospital, but he was not seriously injured. Investigators said the driver could be cited for failure to control his speed and for failure to secure his cargo.
