Juneteenth Celebrations Planned For Houston

Juneteenth became a Texas holiday in 1980. Twenty-six other states declared it a holiday after that.

On Jan. 1, 1863, the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect, abolishing slavery.

Slaves in Galveston were not set free until June 19, 1865.

Celebrations are planned over two weeks.

    Friday and Saturday, June 13 & 14:

  • Houston Rockets Blacktop Battle 3-on-3 Summer Tour, Hunter's Glen Park, 1340 Independence Blvd., Missouri City

    Saturday, June 14:

  • Juneteenth Festival, Arts/crafts, kid, food, health/wellness, business zones, Hunter's Glen Park
  • Juneteenth Musical Festival, Hunter's Glen Park
  • "One Mile of Smiles" Parade, Texas Parkway, begins at Wells Fargo Bank, 2440 Texas Parkway, Missouri City
  • Praise 92.1 Spirit of Praise Youth Choir Challenge, Hunter's Glen Park
  • Battle of the Bands, Hunter's Glen Park

    Thursday, June 19

  • The Down Home Blues Kick Off Concert honoring the legendary Grady Gains and Friends.
    Discovery Green Park, Downtown Houston, 7 p.m.
  • A Gulf Coast Juneteenth featuring ReBirth Brass Band, Geno Delafose and French Rockin' Boogie, Sherman Robertson and Trudy Lynn, and others.
    Miller Outdoor Theatre, Hermann Park, 7:30 p.m.

    Friday, June 20

  • V.I.P. reception, a hair and style show
    The Motown Southern Soul Review staring Ali Ollie Woodson, the former lead singer of The Temptations and Archie Bell and The Drells, all at the Humble Civic Center.

    Saturday, June 21

  • The Freedom Parade in downtown Houston from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. It begins at Texas and Hamilton.
  • Following the parade will be the Black Xtreem Rodeo Show and Concert at the Humble Civic Center from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m.

    Sunday, June 22

  • Wrapping up the festivities will be the June 19th HIP Hop Fashion Infusion Music Celebration.
