The woman who admitted to leaving her niece strapped in a car seat inside a locked car for four hours was charged Wednesday.

Aunt Questioned

Maria Ferrutino was arrested at Texas Children's Hospital while she was visiting her niece, and she was charged one count of injury to a child.

On Tuesday, Ferrutino told police that she accidentally left her 5-month-old niece in a hot car after she parked at her apartment complex, 6233 Gulfton, in southwest Houston around 9 a.m.

When Ferrutino remembered the child at 1:30 p.m., she had her husband go get the baby, who was still inside the car, police said.

The baby was hospitalized with a temperature of 107.5 degrees.

Hospital officials said the baby's temperature was brought back to normal, and she was conscious and put on a respirator. No other information on the baby's condition was released.

The baby's mother said Ferrutino was supposed to care for the child while the mother was at work.
