Lack Of Working Hydrants Hinders Firefighters

By Mariza Reyes

POSTED: Tuesday, May 13, 2008

Firefighters had trouble battling a fire at an abandoned building in Katy on Tuesday, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Investigators are trying to determine the cause of the fire at a building in the 1700 block of Roesner Road that broke out shortly before 3 a.m.

Firefighters said they had trouble putting the flames out because there were no working hydrants in the area.

"The closest working hydrant north or south of here is about a quarter- to three-quarters of a mile away," said Assistant Chief Mark Holloway with the West I-10 Fire Department.

Firefighters called on at least three other fire departments to help bring in water.

The fire threatened a neighboring storage facility, but none of the property was damaged.

The cause remains under investigation by the Harris County Fire Marshal's Office.
