Voters To Decide Municipal Elections
Sugar Land Mayor, Klein Bond On Ballots
POSTED: Friday, May 9, 2008
HOUSTON -- Voters headed to the polls Saturday to elect new leaders in numerous municipal elections, KPRC Local 2 reported.
The highest profile races include electing a new mayor in Sugar Land and deciding the fate of a multimillion-dollar bond proposal in Klein.
Residents in Sugar Land will also elect a new city council member.
Jimmy Thompson, Daniel Wong and Russell Jones are up for mayor while Jacquie Chaumette faces S.B. Gaddi for At-Large Pos. 2.
Voters in northwest Harris County will decide the fate of a proposed $647 million bond for the
Klein Independent School District.
The proposed bond would be distributed as follows.
$346 million to build seven new schools $247 million for renovations $38 million for technology $6 million for safety and security
The bond could raise the tax rate by 20 cents over the next four years.
Some critics said it is too much to use $130 million to build a new high school with another $130 million designated to rebuild one that already exists.'
Other areas electing new mayors include Nassau Bay, Seabrook, Piney Point Village, Morgan's Point and Webster.
Galveston, Baytown, Deer Park, Katy and La Porte are among the cities choosing new city council members.
Voter turnout is expected to be low.
