An ambulance went fast on several roads early Thursday, but it was not trying to get to an emergency -- the driver was running from deputies, officials told KPRC Local 2.

Harris County Precinct 5 deputy constables said they started chasing the driver on the Sam Houston Tollway after he refused to pull over for a traffic stop.

The driver led deputies onto the Southwest Freeway and into Fort Bend County.

Officials said the driver eventually stopped on the Southwest Freeway near University Boulevard, where he was taken into custody.

The driver was suspected of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, officials said.

Harris County Toll Road Authority officials said the driver worked for the ambulance company.
