Brick Hits Woman's Face While Driving

UPDATED: 6:45 pm CDT May 5, 2008

A 21-year-old woman was hospitalized after someone threw a brick through the windshield of her car on a northwest Harris County road, KPRC Local 2 reported Monday.

Megan Elizabeth Cox was driving in the 16600 block of Huffmeister Road shortly after midnight on Sunday when a brick came through her front windshield, striking her in the left side of her face.

Cox was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where she underwent a five-hour reconstructive operation.

"The whole left side of her face was crushed, so her tear duct is nicked. Her eyelid is pretty much gashed and they have to repair that. All the bones in her face have to be reconstructed. Her jaw is cracked. Her teeth are chipped," said Kurt Cox, Megan's father.

Cox was on the phone with her fiancé when she was hit.

"I heard lots of clacking. I didn't really hear a crash and then I heard her say, 'I think I'm blind,'" Frank Danna said.

Investigators said as Cox drove northbound on Huffmeister Road, a SUV swerved into her lane and someone inside hurled a red brick into her windshield.

"She could have been killed. If it wasn't for the grace of God and prayers -- because if you see the windshield, it was right in front of her face," Kurt Cox said.

Investigators are trying to hunt down the person responsible.

"A brick coming through a window in a moving vehicle is extremely dangerous. It is an aggravated assault and we'll certainly press charges if we find the suspects," said Lt. John Legg with the Harris County Sheriff's Department.

"We need to stop this. What happens if somebody really thinks this is fun and they don't realize there's a consequence that somebody's life could have been taken. And they're going to pay for what somebody thought was fun. But it was just mean. It's inconceivable," said Kim Cox, Megan's mother.

Cox's family said they rely heavily on their faith and have already forgiven the attacker.

Doctors said Cox's eyesight was not permanently damaged and surgery should be able to repair her injuries.

Investigators said they do not have a lot to go on and hope tips provide information to solve the case.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Harris County Sheriff's Department at 713-221-6000.
