UPDATED: 5:25 pm CDT April 23, 2008

A 2-year-old girl was hit by a stray bullet early Wednesday as she slept inside her family's southwest Houston apartment, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Houston police said someone opened fire on a unit at The Park at Lakeside Apartments on Briar Forest Drive near Lakeside Estates at about 2:30 a.m.

Relatives said Koreyal Dixon was asleep in a bedroom when bullets came in through the window.

"She fell asleep in my arms," grandmother Sheila Dixon said. "I put her in the same spot that she was laying in when this accident happened."

Koreyal was shot in the face and upper body and injured by cracked glass. She was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital in critical condition, but she was alert and talking. She underwent surgery and is expected to recover.

Witnesses said the shooter used a shotgun. Bullet holes were visible in the front door and every window.

"Why would you all shoot in that house?" Koreyal's aunt Renschelle Dixon said. "When I saw all them bullets, you all was shooting to kill. You all was shooting low. Them children was asleep."

Twelve children were in the apartment when the shooter opened fire. Many of the children were there for a family gathering.

"To shoot up a house with kids in it, man, you just didn't care," Sheila Dixon said. "They need to be brought to justice."

Witnesses said there was a shooting at the complex on Tuesday that police responded to, but no one was arrested. Koreyal's relatives said one of the family members had tried to break up that fight.

Police have not said if the two shootings were connected.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
