You can find just about anything on craigslist.com -- even a scam, KPRC Local 2 reported Tuesday.

Two pianos were recently posted on the Web site for $500 each.

"We were trying to raise money for a mission trip," mission coordinator Cindy Drummer said. "We were doing it in the spirit of Christ to help people in need."

The Rock Church in Alvin, Texas, was trying to raise enough money to go to South Africa to help a community get better running water by building new wells.

Within minutes of the pianos going online, they apparently had a buyer.

The buyer sent a cashier's check, which church officials took to their bank, but there was something wrong. The check was made out for $2900 too much.

"I don't think anyone thought we were being scammed," Drummer said. "I just thought he made a mistake or the bank made a mistake."

The church wired the extra money back, only to later find out the check was no good.

"I think it's pretty sad that anyone would stoop so low to con a church organization," said Drummer.

Instead of making money to help people, they have to pay $250 a month back to the bank.

"Nothing is sacred anymore," Alvin Police Chief Mike Merkel said.

He said there is a new disturbing trend where thieves are targeting charitable organizations, including churches.

The Alvin Police Department worked with federal investigators to track the scammer back to a computer in Illinois. Jorge Lopez was arrested by the Secret Service and has been charged with three different kinds of fraud. Investigators said he was using the Internet to scam people all over the country.

"I do hope that he gets locked up for a long time," said Drummer. "I hope that other people or organizations or churches don't get victimized like we were."

Police said even though the someone has been charged in this case, there are other scam artists out there using similar tactics.
